Tidal Coffee – Great Coffee by the Sea

Tidal Coffee – Introduction

Seven Mile Beach is an enigma in Tasmania. It is quite close to Hobart and very close to the airport – but it feels like it miles from anywhere and that living there is like living in a coastal resort.

And now, into the mix comes a converted container set up by Tori and Chris where they provide excellent coffee. Tori has been making us coffee for years and is one of Hobart’s most professional baristas who many will have seen behind the machines at Pigeon Whole Bakers and at the Sunday Market.

The business is called “tidal coffee” and can be found easily by driving along the road to the Hobart airport and when arriving at the roundabout where you turn left to enter the airport, going straight ahead on Grueber Avenue through the pine forest until you reach Surf Road and see the signs on the right side of the road for tidal coffee.

We should add here that this pine forest is an excellent place for foraging for mushrooms, but only do this if you know what you are looking for because some mushrooms can be dangerous.

Here there is a large car park with the tidal coffee sign clearly visible. The car park sits in front of the sprawling site run by Westlands Nursery which is easy to spot from the road.

Once you have parked you will see ahead of you the building housing the coffee machine as well as some tables and chairs inside and on the balcony. Some more are on the lawn in front of the building.

There is a window (once again with the tidal coffee sign) where you place your order and you can also order pastries sourced from Pigeon Whole Bakers and Six Russell Bakers. These are both excellent venues for pastry making with Pigeon Whole Bakers being a well-known fixture in the Hobart CBD for many years.

Six Russell on the other hand is an emerging butterfly that has been supplying venues around Hobart with pastries for some time, but which has recently opened to the public for coffee, pastries and sandwiches. We are now awaiting the opening of their Sandy Bay cafe at the same site in a month or so.

We ordered a ham croissant from Six Russell Bakers and for coffee we ordered an espresso followed by a filter in a mug, which was perfect for the cold morning.

When it came to coffee there was a choice of two very good options of beans and the one that we chose had not been over-roasted (we find that heavily roasted beans are not conducive to appreciating the subtle flavours of coffee). The coffee was expertly made as we expected and we reflected on how it is so good to see such a service available in this area.

As we sat at one of the tables on the outside terrace along with many other coffee adicts we reflected once again on how coffee has becaome one of the biggest businesses world-wide and how no matter where a decent coffee business opens up offering coffee made from interesting beans the customers will come!

We are certain that tidal coffee will be very popular due both to the location and to the professionalism of the service.
