Hamlet – A wonderful community service

Hamlet – An Overview

Hamlet has established itself as a restaurant serving very good food and coffee while providing a wonderful service to those in Hobart who are seeking the basic skills necessary to work in the hospitality industry.

We need to stress that this amazing venue, while providing training and a supportive environment for those who need it the most, does not compromise on the food, coffee and other items that are available here. In fact it is one of our favourite venues for breakfast and lunch in Hobart and we are never disappointed.

The venue is situated just a couple of blocks from the centre of Hobart at the start of the Rivulet track that winds its way from central Hobart to the Cascade Brewery in South Hobart. It is a pleasant space with both inside and outside seating.

The venue is the brainchild of Emily Briffa who has been involved with the original conception of the concept as well as overseeing the services provided during the five years of operation so far. (On our most recent visit she was busy dispensing the coffees that are so popular here.)

The kitchen has always turned out delicious food, and it just keeps getting better and better. The team of chefs includes Peter Cooksley who was at the helm of Franklin when it closed down during Covid and Cam Perry who previously cooked at Garagistes and has been at Hamlet for a long term stint.

Hamlet – The Food

The chefs not only turn out dishes such as delicious omelettes for breakfast and hand-cut noodles for lunch, they also bake a delicious array of pastries and make copious quantities of preserves and ferments (that line the wall behind the coffee machine) both for enhancing the dishes at Hamlet but also for sale to the public.

Lately the dishes have been featuring more and more ferments making them both interesting and nutritionally beneficial. There is also an emphasis on very fresh fish.

We urge you to try this special place but be aware that it is very, very popular so it is worth making a booking, especially at lunch time.

They also have accumulated a fine range of preserves and other goods that you can buy to take home to add to your larder. These are excellent products and we regularly buy them to supplement our own supplies.
